Okavango Mobile Safari

What to expect...

The drive from Maun takes around 3–4 hours in an open safari vehicle and is included in your trip. Much of the journey is along dirt tracks through increasingly wild country, and there’s every chance your wildlife viewing will begin before you even reach camp — elephants are often seen along the way.

You’ll usually leave Maun in the morning and arrive at camp around lunchtime. Once there, you’ll have time to settle into your tent, meet the camp team and receive a safety briefing from your guide before sitting down to a hearty lunch.

  • Accommodation is in comfortable two-person dome tents, each with a private en-suite bucket shower and bush toilet. You’ll sleep on a raised stretcher bed with a comfortable mattress, pillow and fresh linen, and towels are provided. Your tent will be serviced daily.

  • Each full day typically includes an early-morning game drive, departing at around 6am, and an afternoon drive from around 4pm. The exact timing and length of the drives will depend on wildlife activity, conditions and what you would like to do.

  • Three freshly prepared meals are served each day, and most dietary requirements can be catered for with advance notice.

  • Whenever possible, you’ll enjoy sunrise out in the bush with tea, coffee and biscuits, while afternoon drives often finish with a sundowner in a beautiful spot — perhaps with some snacks and a cold drink or G&T.

  • Evenings are relaxed and informal, usually spent around the campfire sharing stories from the day, listening to the sounds of the bush and hearing a few tales from your guides. In some areas, night drives may also be possible, giving you the chance to look for nocturnal wildlife and predators on the move.

One of the joys of a mobile safari is its flexibility. Your guide will work around the conditions, wildlife and your interests, so if there’s something in particular you’d love to see or experience, just let them know.

Wild Camping on Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

What to expect...

You’ll leave Maun early in the morning for the approximately three-hour journey towards Ntwetwe Pan. The first part of the trip is made in a closed vehicle, before transferring to an open safari vehicle as you approach the pans and leave the main roads behind — both transfers are included.

The Makgadikgadi is an extraordinary landscape covering around 12,000 km², made up of a vast network of salt pans. The two largest, Ntwetwe and Sowa, are remnants of an enormous prehistoric lake that once covered much of this part of Botswana. Today, the seemingly endless horizons create one of the most unusual landscapes in Africa.

  • En route, there is the option to stop at Planet Baobab, where enormous ancient baobabs surround the lodge. You can stop for lunch, or even add an overnight stay if you’d prefer to break up the journey.

  • You’ll aim to reach the pans in the early afternoon, giving you time to settle in and enjoy a hot bucket shower. You can choose to sleep in the comfort of your tent or, conditions permitting, swap the canvas for a bedroll beneath the stars.

  • As the afternoon cools, you’ll head out onto the pan for one of the highlights of the trip: sundowners surrounded by an almost endless horizon. Out here, the scale and silence of the landscape are difficult to describe until you experience them for yourself.

  • After sunset, you’ll return to camp for a freshly prepared hot dinner, followed by an evening around the fire beneath the enormous Kalahari sky.

  • On a clear, moonless night, the lack of light pollution can make the pans an exceptional place for stargazing, with an uninterrupted view from horizon to horizon.

  • An early start the following morning is highly recommended. Watching the first light spread across the pan is every bit as memorable as sunset — with tea, coffee and biscuits available while you watch the day begin.

  • After a hearty breakfast, camp will be packed up and you’ll begin the journey back towards Maun.

  • Keep your eyes open throughout the journey. Depending on the season and route, wildlife in the wider Makgadikgadi and Nxai area can include elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, antelope and, occasionally, predators.

There are several ways to experience the pans, so this itinerary can easily be adapted. Depending on the season and how much time you have, you can also incorporate additional experiences such as visiting habituated meerkats, quad biking across the pans or spending another night in the area.

What to expect...

Set within the Khwai Private Reserve on the edge of the Okavango Delta, Tuludi offers a very different safari experience to mobile camping. Here, days exploring the wilderness are combined with beautifully designed accommodation, exceptional food and plenty of space to relax between activities.

You'll usually reach Tuludi by light aircraft from Maun, followed by a game-drive transfer from the airstrip to camp. From the moment you arrive, everything is taken care of, leaving you free to settle in and enjoy one of Botswana's most beautiful wilderness areas.

  • Tuludi has just seven spacious tented suites, raised amongst the trees and overlooking the surrounding floodplains. Each has a large bedroom and living area, en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers and a bathtub, as well as a private deck and plunge pool.

  • Your days typically begin early with tea or coffee before heading out on a morning game drive. The Khwai Private Reserve is known for excellent wildlife viewing, with elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog and a huge variety of other wildlife regularly encountered.

  • After your morning activity, you'll return to camp for breakfast or brunch and some downtime. Relax beside your private plunge pool, enjoy the main swimming pool, retreat to the elevated treehouse library or simply watch wildlife passing across the floodplain.

  • Afternoon tea is followed by another safari activity. Depending on the season and water levels, you can explore by 4x4, mokoro or boat, while guided bush walks may also be available.

  • Being in a private reserve means you're not restricted to the same rules as the national parks. Night drives are possible, giving you the opportunity to stay out after sunset and search for some of the Okavango's nocturnal wildlife and predators.

  • Sundowners are an important part of the afternoon, usually enjoyed somewhere out in the bush before continuing your drive as darkness falls.

  • Back at camp, evenings revolve around excellent food, a relaxed drink and time around the fire before retiring to your suite and the sounds of the African bush.

  • All meals, selected drinks, twice-daily safari activities, laundry and local airstrip transfers are generally included, so once you're in camp there is very little else to think about.
