5. International Travel and International Data Transfers

Into the Okavango arranges travel in Botswana and potentially other international destinations.

Providing your travel services may therefore require us to send relevant personal information from the United States to camps, lodges, airlines, charter operators, guides, transportation companies and other suppliers located outside the United States.

Privacy and data-protection laws in those countries may differ from those in the United States.

We seek to limit information shared internationally to what is reasonably necessary to arrange or provide your travel and to work with reputable travel suppliers.

6. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website may use cookies and similar technologies.

Cookies are small data files placed on or associated with your browser or device.

We may use:

Essential Cookies

These support basic website operation, security and functionality.

Preference Cookies

These may remember choices or preferences to improve your experience.

Analytics Cookies

These may help us understand how visitors use our website, which pages are visited and how the website performs.

Marketing or Advertising Technologies

If we use advertising or re-marketing technologies, they may collect information about website activity to measure advertising or show relevant advertising.

Where applicable law gives you a right to opt out of these activities, we will provide an appropriate mechanism to exercise that choice.

You can also control many cookies through your browser settings. Disabling certain cookies may affect website functionality.

7. Online Tracking and Do Not Track Signals

Some browsers allow users to send a “Do Not Track” or similar signal.

Because there is not currently a universally accepted standard for responding to traditional Do Not Track signals, our website does not currently respond to those signals.

Third-party analytics or advertising providers used on our website may collect information about your device or website activity through cookies or similar technologies.

If applicable law requires us to recognize a specific legally recognized opt-out preference signal, we will comply with that requirement.

8. Sale, Sharing and Targeted Advertising

We do not sell personal information for money.

We do not provide customer information to unrelated third parties for those third parties to independently market their products or services directly to our customers.

Certain analytics or advertising technologies can, under some U.S. state privacy laws, constitute “selling,” “sharing,” or processing for targeted advertising even where no money is exchanged.

If we engage in activity that is legally classified in this way and an applicable law provides you with an opt-out right, we will provide the required method for exercising that right.

9. Marketing Communications

We may send occasional news, safari information, special offers or other marketing communications where permitted by law.

You may unsubscribe from marketing emails at any time by:

Unsubscribing from marketing does not prevent us from sending transactional or service-related communications concerning an enquiry or booking.

We may retain limited information necessary to record and honor an unsubscribe request.

10. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected and for legitimate business, legal, accounting, dispute-resolution and regulatory requirements.

Retention periods vary depending on the type of information.

When determining how long information should be retained, we consider:

  • whether the information remains necessary to provide services;

  • the sensitivity of the information;

  • the length of our relationship with you;

  • legal and regulatory recordkeeping requirements;

  • tax and accounting requirements;

  • possible disputes or claims; and

  • security considerations.

Sensitive travel information, such as passport, medical, accessibility or allergy information, should not be retained longer than reasonably necessary for the travel arrangements for which it was provided unless there is a legitimate reason to retain it.

When information is no longer reasonably required, we may delete it, securely destroy it or anonymize it.

11. Data Security

We maintain reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, loss or misuse.

However, no electronic system, internet transmission or storage method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

We encourage customers not to send unnecessary sensitive information through unsecured communications.

  • request correction of inaccurate information;

  • request deletion of information where appropriate;

  • unsubscribe from marketing; or

  • raise a question or concern about our privacy practices.

We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request.

We may retain information where reasonably necessary or legally required, including for tax, accounting, regulatory, fraud-prevention, dispute-resolution or contractual purposes.

U.S. State Privacy Rights

Residents of certain U.S. states may have additional privacy rights if and to the extent the applicable state privacy law applies to Into the Okavango.

Depending on applicable law, these rights may include the right to:

  • know or access personal information;

  • correct inaccurate personal information;

  • request deletion;

  • obtain a portable copy of certain information;

  • opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information;

  • opt out of targeted advertising;

  • limit certain uses of sensitive personal information; or

  • appeal a decision concerning a privacy request.

We may also choose to honor reasonable privacy requests even where a particular statutory right does not apply.

13. California Privacy Information

California residents may have rights under various California privacy laws.

Into the Okavango does not disclose customers' personal information to third parties for those third parties' own independent direct-marketing purposes.

The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended, applies only to businesses that meet specified statutory thresholds. If Into the Okavango becomes subject to that law, we will provide the notices, rights and opt-out mechanisms required by it.

14. Children's Information

Our website and services are intended for adults and are not directed to children under 13.

Parents or guardians may provide information about children who are included in a family travel booking when that information is reasonably necessary to arrange the child's travel.

We ask that children do not submit personal information directly to us without involvement of a parent or guardian.

15. Third-Party Websites

Our website may contain links to websites operated by safari camps, government agencies, airlines, tourism organizations and other third parties.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party websites.

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of websites you visit.

16. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy & Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our services, technology, business practices or legal requirements.

The current version will be posted on our website with an updated “Last Updated” date.

If we make a material change to how we handle personal information, we may provide additional notice where appropriate or required by law.
